Warsaw: Gateway to the Northern Neck

The town of Warsaw lies in the heart of Richmond County and has a rich history dating back some 350 years. In 1730, the area we now know as Warsaw was christened as Richmond County Courthouse and was the dedicated county seat.

In 1830, news of the Battle of Warsaw, a particularly bloody battle of the Polish-Russian War, reached the United States. Shocked and saddened by the ongoing battles, many small towns around the country decided to adopt the name Warsaw in a show of sympathy.

Just off of Route 360 between Court Circle and Wallace Rd Stands a historical road marker dedicated to the history of the town.

It reads:

When Richmond County was formed in 1692, this place became the county seat and was known as Richmond (County) Courthouse. The present courthouse building was erected in 1748-49. The village was renamed Warsaw about 1846 in sympathy with the Polish struggle for liberty. It was the home of Congressman William A. Jones, advocate of Philippine independence.

Several historic homes and buildings of notoriety still exist in the Warsaw area. Sabine Hall is a 1730’s era plantation home that belonged to Col. Landon Carter, son of Robert “King” Carter. Mt. Airy is a historic mansion that was originally home to Col. John Tayloe II. Tayloe was known to be one of the richest planters in colonial Virginia. Mt. Airy was also operated as a successful thoroughbred horse stud farm.

Both of these estates are still owned and maintained by family members of the original occupants.

The now crumbling Menokin plantation was home to Francis Lightfoot Lee, a signer of the Declaration of Independence and his wife Rebecca Tayloe. Efforts are ongoing to raise funds and preserve what remains of this historical gem.

In the center of town stands the 1889 home of Congressmen William A. Jones who is best remembered for his advocacy of independence for the Philippines. His support resulted in the passage of legislation bearing his name under which the Philippine people obtained their national independence
