Taxaide packets now available

A Middle Peninsula Taxaide volunteer, foreground, assists a client during a session in the fellowship hall of Immanuel Baptist Church in Saluda this past summer. Following the March 2020 COVID-19 pandemic arrival, it was the only site in Virginia that reopened before the July 15, 2020 filing deadline and used plastic shields and other special precautions. “Our volunteers just felt a special sense of obligation to those people who have depended on us year after year to prepare their taxes – we could not let them down,” said Taxaide Coordinator Godwin Jones. For Middle Peninsula taxpayers who wish to have Taxaide prepare their taxes, packets may now be picked up at the Deltaville Public Library, the Cryer Center in Locust Hill or the Urbanna Public Library. Taxaide reps ask that you take only one packet for each tax return to be prepared.

The Taxaide program, sponsored by AARP Foundation in cooperation with the IRS, provides tax preparation service for taxpayers with low to moderate income. Membership in AARP is not required.

After gathering all forms and completing the information requested in the packet, the taxpayer may then call for an appointment at a special phone number that is in the packet instructions. Appointments will all be on Wednesdays and can include evenings for those who work during the day.

Taxpayers should bring all the packet contents plus all their tax documents. All the documents should be removed from the mailing envelopes and all trash discarded. If unsure which documents should be included, taxpayers can review their previous year’s return. Requests for appointments should only be made after all documents are received.

Upon arrival at the Cryer Center for appointment, taxpayers will remain in vehicle. Documents will be picked up, reviewed, scanned into a secure cloud-based system and returned to the taxpayer. Taxes will be prepared remotely.

The counselor and quality reviewer may phone the taxpayer to clarify any issues. It is important for the taxpayer to recognize the number calling and answer the phone.

After documents are scanned, an appointment will be made for the following Wednesday to review the return, sign the authorization for Taxaide to e-file and receive a printed copy of the return.

Taxaide services are also available in Gloucester, Mathews and Gloucester Point. Packets, which are site specific, may be picked up at the Gloucester Public Library, Mathews Public Library or on Wednesdays at Gloucester Point Baptist Church, depending on where the taxpayer wishes to have his or her taxes prepared.
