Middlesex AARP TaxAide group offering free tax prep assistance

A Middlesex County Taxaide volunteer, right, assists a client during a session in the fellowship hall of Immanuel Baptist Church in Saluda in 2020. Following the March 2020 COVID-19 pandemic hit, it was the only site in Virginia that reopened before the July 15, 2020 filing deadline and used plastic shields and other special precautions. “Our volunteers just felt a special sense of obligation to those people who have depended on us year after year to prepare their taxes – we could not let them down,” said then-Middlesex Coordinator Godwin Jones.

The Middlesex AARP TaxAide group starts its tax services for 2023 federal and Virginia tax preparation Wednesday, Feb. 8, at the Cryer Center at 7485 General Puller Highway (Route 33) in Locust Hill. The group prepares tax returns for taxpayers with low to moderate income with emphasis on senior citizens. The TaxAide program is sponsored by the AARP Foundation in cooperation with the IRS. Membership in AARP is not required and the service is provided at no charge.

Taxes in Middlesex will be done by appointment only. To schedule an appointment, call 993-2976 between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. Appointments will be scheduled on most Wednesdays, Feb. 8-April 12.

The Middle Peninsula AARP TaxAide group will also be preparing taxes at the Gloucester County Library (GCL) on most Mondays, Fridays and Saturdays by appointment.

Appointments for the Gloucester library can be made online at or in person by TaxAide volunteers at the Gloucester County Library Community Room. GCL personnel will have information on how you can make an appointment, but are unable to make appointments. Note that because of very limited availability of counselors this year, returns with itemized deductions (long form) or original returns for tax years prior to 2022 will not be prepared at GCL.

It is necessary when you come for your appointment at either location to bring all your tax documents for 2022, photo IDs (driver’s licenses) for the taxpayer and spouse, Social Security cards for taxpayers listed on the return and dependents, banking information for direct deposit (a blank check is preferable) and last year’s tax return if available. Arrive about 15 minutes prior to your appointment to complete the required paperwork.

If there are any questions, leave a message on the Middle Peninsula TaxAide line at 654-1407. Do not request appointments on this number.
