The Mathews VA250 Committee, along with the Mathews Bay School Community Arts Center, recently announced a competition to design two LOVEworks signs. Proposals and bids are due by January 25.
The initial award to construct the signs was announced in November and the committee is seeking artists to submit their proposals for signs at the former Oyster Seed Holdings, now The Hatchery on Gwynn’s Island, and also at Williams Wharf, now a recreation area with kayaking and rowing. Both of the LOVEworks signs will be visible from the water.
Spokesperson for VA250, Laura Jones notes, “Artists can come up with what the signs will actually look like and submit their designs by January 25,” said Laura Jones. “Following that, there will be a public display of design proposals at The Bay School and a public reveal of the selected proposals on February 25. From March through June there will be construction of the LOVEworks sites followed by an anticipated June 28 ribbon cutting at each of the signage areas, with a reception at The Bay School.”
Selection of the winners will be done by a panel of artists chosen by Bay School director Pam Doss and VA250 Committee chairman Fred Lyon. The project is open to all Virginia artists at all stages of their careers, with certain stipulations.
The sign at Williams Wharf will honor and commemorate the Revolutionary War history of Mathews County and inspire young people to remember the past and appreciate a legacy that belongs to them and to future generations. The sign at The Hatchery will embody both the history and the shellfish aquaculture industry in Mathews.
