Warmer days are here, restrictions are starting to lift, and summer is on the horizon! The outdoors are calling and there are so many great ways and places to spend your time at the Rivah. Take a walk in the park

Logan, a black mouth cur mix, enjoys exploring and relaxing at Machicomoco State Park.

Explore the natural beauty and pristine landscapes of the Middle Peninsula with a leisurely walk in one the areas many parks. Let your dog get some exercise and dip his paws in the river at one of these fabulous locations.

Machicomoco State Park in Gloucester is Virginia’s newest state park. The unique design of the park and its structures are dedicated to increasing the awareness and understanding of Virginia’s native tribes. The park sits on the York River and includes paths for walking and/or biking. Machicomoco also features a large open-air pavilion containing educational infographic exhibits. The open fields, woodlands and marsh areas provide the perfect environment for wildlife of all sorts.

The Holly Point Nature Park in Deltaville offers fun experiences for visitors of all ages (and their pups too!) Spend some time enjoying the shoreline or take a walk through the sculpture garden. There is even a children’s garden for the little ones featuring edible landscapes! Peruse the park and learn about the the beautiful town of Deltavile at the Deltaville Maritime Museum.

Head over to Mathews for a visit to Bethel Beach Natural Area Preserve to explore the sandy shoreline, low dunes, and salt marsh habitats. The landscape is constantly being changed by storms and strong currents, making each trip a unique experience.  The preserve is home to over 185 bird species including many rare shore birds.

When visiting parks, be sure to keep your pets leashed and supervised. Clean up any messes and try not to disturb the natural habitats. Be courteous and try to leave things as you found them.

Looking to do a little shopping? The farmers’ market is the perfect place to peruse with your pet. Each of the area’s markets offer fresh, locally grown produce, homemade baked goods, eggs, meats, and more from the region’s finest farmers. Explore handmade crafts, clothing, jewelry, ceramics, soaps, etc. from skilled artisans. Every market is a bit different from the next, no to are exactly alike!

The Mathews Farmers’ Market is located on Court Street on the Historic Courthouse Green. The market is open every Saturday from April to October from 9 am to 1 pm.

The Tappahannock Farmers’ Market is held on the third Saturday of every month from April to November and runs from 9-1 pm. The market is located on Cross Street Between Queen and Prince Streets.
