The town of Montross is surely a hidden gem in Westmoreland County. Though small in size, Montross makes up for it with big personality. This little town has a laid-back, hometown feel and is a great place to visit when passing through the area. Explore History

Westmoreland County is well-know for its rich history and its ties to several prominent leaders from our Nation’s past. Stratford Hall and George Washington’s Birthplace are two popular landmarks that bring in visitors from around the county. The town of Montross also has a fascinating history that is worth researching and discovering. When visiting Montross, plan to stop in at the Westmoreland County Museum (the Northern Neck’s oldest museum) to discover the artifacts and stories of the county and its people.

The museum has a diverse collection of treasures including an 1898 portrait of Robert E. Lee and a chair from George Washington’s dining room. Other exhibits highlight Native American culture, geology, and archaeology of local sites, a furniture collection, and an extensive painting and portrait collection.  Also available for use is a genealogy and research library.

Take a walk around the museum grounds and explore the “President’s Garden,” which contains busts of locally born presidents and an array of eye-catching blooms. Stop in at the 1950’s style Soda Shoppe and enjoy a brown cow (root beer float) or another old-fashioned treat. And don’t forget to check out the Westmoreland Mercantile General Store. This replicated 1920s-1930s general store offers beloved classic candies, local treats, and arts and craft items from local artisans.

The museum hosts various events and lectures throughout the year and also participates in community events. Don’t miss the opportunity to see history come to life at this must-see hot spot!

The Art of Coffee is a favorite for residents and visitors alike.

If you’re hungry for something other than candy and ice cream or looking to add a little pep to your step then the Art of Coffee may be the perfect place for you. This quaint little coffee shop is a favorite of both locals and visitors and offers a plethora of tasty food and beverage options. The Art of Coffee is open daily and offers breakfast and lunch. Grab a full meal, a small bite, or a homemade dessert with a top-notch cup of coffee. You can even enjoy a craft beer while surfing the internet. Fill your belly and peruse the local artworks that are featured throughout the coffeehouse.  With new offerings every day, there is always something new to enjoy!

Take an art stroll

Montross has an affinity for fine art that is reflected nearly everywhere you look around town! When passing through, It’s hard to miss the large murals that cover the walls of numerous businesses. These large-scale artworks are the work of the talented artists of the Montross Mural Studio founded and led by Melanie Stimmell Van Latum. Some examples of their work can be found at the Art of Coffee, Angelo’s Pizza, and the old Coca-Cola plant. Each of these artworks portrays elements of the Northern Neck and is focused on celebrating the unique aspects of Montross. When visiting the town, be sure to take a stroll around town to admire these masterpieces up close!

Another acclaimed attraction that will be returning to the town of Montross in May is their First Friday’s event. On the first Friday of every month from May to October, visitors are invited to come experience live music, great food, vendors, and the works of local artists and artisans. Meet and converse with the artists of Montross and take home a treasure or two!

Picking and Grinning is the newest edition to the streets of Montross.

When mapping out your day in Montross, be sure to save some time to shop around and explore the many fantastic retailers around town.
