Montross is packed with historic roots, natural beauty and an especially charming main street. The County Seat of Westmoreland County has a little bit of everything, like boutique shopping, fantastic dining options and breweries, art galleries and over a dozen murals spread throughout town, several historical monuments and stunning cliff-side landscapes on the Potomac River. Whether you’re making a trip to Montross for a weekend or just a day, there’s something for everyone.
1. Treasure hunting
Adults and children can spend an entire day visiting a number of antique and thrift shops. Compulsive Cravings and Montross Vintage are both on Kings Highway. You can’t miss Picking & Grinning. With replicas of the Mystery Machine from Scooby Doo and the school bus from Charlie Brown in the front parking lot undeniably catching the eye of those driving by, it’s only a taste of what’s inside. Mint condition vintage Indian Motorcycles, an entire biplane, walls of vintage cameras and guitars, hundreds of record albums and plenty of other memorabilia will have you looking through the one-of-a-kind shop for hours on end. Plus, they also have an ice-cream parlor, totally solidifying all feelings of nostalgia.
2. Take a hike
Just beyond Montross you can stretch your legs and take in the incredible views of the Potomac River at Westmoreland State Park. A short hike leads to Fossil Beach and picturesque views of the cliffs that tower over the Potomac River and a long stretch of sandy beach where shark teeth wash up on shore. The park also offers lodging with cabins and camp sites. Kayaks and paddle boards can be rented, too, to enjoy summer days in the sun.
3. Lap around the rink
Weekend fun for the whole family can be found at Stan’s Skateland. With instructor’s available to help teach patrons how to skate, heading to the skating rink is a great way to get in some exercise with the family. Skating around the rink feels like you’re skating back in time, especially with pinball machines, air hockey, a pool table and a Pac Man machine. There’s also a concession stand with tasty treats for when you work up an appetite.
4. Take in historic sights
The Montross area has plenty of attractions for history buffs. From George Washington’s birthplace just a hop skip and a jump away to the Westmoreland County Museum with an impressive Native American exhibit highlighting native culture, archeology and geology, there’s so much to learn and see. Stratford Hall Preserve is another landmark worthy of a trip. Established in the 1730s by Thomas Lee, the stunning Georgian home is on a sprawling 1500-acre plantation on the Potomac. It housed four generations of Lee’s, including Robert E. Lee, as well as Francis Lightfoot Lee. Stratford Hall is also home to a number of wine and oyster festivals throughout the year.
5. Cool off with a pint
Nothing beats a cold beer after a long day of exploring and enjoying a hidden gem of a town like Montrose. Northern Neck Brewing Company offers locally crafted beers that are brewed in-house, including blondes, stouts, pilsners and also wine along with a full kitchen and menu specials. The venue right in the heart of town is perfect for big groups with the ample open space. Be sure to catch the weekend music.
